Nanocarriers for Sustainable Active Packaging: An Overview during and Post COVID-19

Lockdown has been installed due to the fast spread of COVID-19, and several challenges have occurred. Active packaging was considered a sustainable option for mitigating risks food systems during COVID-19. Biopolymeric-based active incorporating release compounds with antimicrobial antioxidant activity represents an innovative solution increasing shelf life maintaining quality transportation from producers consumers. However, requires certain physical, chemical, mechanical performances, which biopolymers such as proteins, polysaccharides, lipids not satisfied. In addition, low stability can easily burst when added directly into biopolymeric materials. Due these drawbacks, encapsulation lipid-based, polymeric-based, nanoclay-based nanocarriers currently captured increased interest. Nanocarriers protect control enhance performance matrices. The aim this manuscript is provide overview regarding benefits released compound-loaded in developing biopolymeric-based properties. improve properties matrix increase bioactivity compounds.
